The "Nothing"

Ok... this trick is one of the few tricks you will do that your entire body will be seperated from the ski. That means there is a good chance you will wreck and wreck hard... Nothings are all about unweighting yourself at the right time and being neutral to the ski... By "neutral" I mean you want to not effect the flight of the ski w/ your weight, the ski should fly pretty much by itself.

"nothing"
To do this you will need approach the wave w/ both feet next to each other, in the center of the tray (not in footholds). Then as you are leaving the top of the wave unweight your body by jumping w/ the ski... this is hard to explain, but you basicly jump right before the ski leaves the water. This will remove the downward force your body is applying to the ski. If you don't perform this jump (hop) the ski will drop out from under you like a rock... That's scary sh*t and always ends in pain or twisted ankles...

Now that you are in the air pull legs up and out (remember the gunwales are high and you have to clear them) so always pull up then out. As you are doing this, you remove your hands and extend them fully into an "X" patern w/ the right leg lining up w/ leg arm ect... Then hold position as long as possible... always pull legs first and hand last... then when getting back to ski, always grab bars first then plant feet... This methos gives the most control and least chance of injury.

As you land the ski should be less than 45 degree angle so you don't go in, flounder around then continue riding... This should be a one complete move and you should still be moving forward in a riding position when done...

A few tips:

look at your feet when moving them out... It helped me figure out where I was at at first
limiting rope is a big help if the ski or tray gets away from you. THAT DOESN"T MEAN USING A ROPE IS OK... THAT'S CHEATING BITCHES... Only use it if you are gonna wreck or die..
practice unweighting yourself by doing pre-hops or bunny hops on flat water... do a few and just lift the feet up a bit to feel it out
remember style and extension are everything w/ this trick... full extension is sweet... everything else is cockroach...
practice just doing no-footers after you get the unweighting thing down... (basicly the same as a nothing except hands don't come off bars)recomended modifications/gear

Hydro Turf 25mm underpadding
Hydro Turf mats (for good traction)
shortened handpole
remove spring in pole
either tighten pole w/ double locking nuts (tight), or loose/dead weight w/ no spring (how my pole is)
lace up shoes (wrestling)... the slip on type will allow your feet to slide inside the shoe... ouch!!!!
Helmet w/ cage or face protectionthat's all I can think of right now...

Of course I got no good pics of them fully extended...

i watched you do a couple of these this weekend...

the movement itself is VERY quick.....granted, these were off small waves...and you had full extension

yeah... this is the standup version though... I guess most things still apply... I think they are a lot easier w/ fixed steering though

Or 2 months off and physical therapy three times a week for your mashed rotator cuff :frown: At least, that's what happened to me - lost the ski far enough that I couldn't grab it, but not so far that I missed it when I landed. That was probably the most painful "landing" I've ever had, and that includes when I broke my leg.

I definitely recommend starting with the no footer first, and on smallish surf/waves. It's a freaky feeling pulling your feet out of the tray, and it takes a few goes to get past that.

ouch.

He is right though. They are much harder to get good extension and hold on a stand up. Especially when some small movement throws the ski out of wack mid-air.

I knew I would get some good stuff from you on this...
You are one of the 4 people I know that do this trick on a standup.

I've tried them on smaller waves with a pole. I know they're harder.

Didn't edwin pull off some good ones at the secret spot?

Good write up.

It's pretty much the same action on a bicycle or mxer. The key for me is to throw the nothing early- just as soon as you leave the lip, which gives you extra time to grab the bars again, and put your feet back where they belong. The bicycle especially, you need to find the pedals, or your balls might get crushed.

So... for me the rhythm is launch, snap! (throw out the limbs) and then casually grab the sled, ride away with surf style slouch- like it was eeeeasy, oh yeah.

I know someone who does 'em with his feet together, toes pointed, and one arm out in front, like a superhero pointing it at the center of the sun- sick. I can't do 'em with my feet together.

nice... this is one I did on a B1 that came out really nice..

So, I did this before about 8 years ago in Jacksonville on a conspicuously similar yellow SJ. I wish the 7 foot wave had been much smaller because it hurts a lot to land on top of a crashing SJ from 30 feet up. One nasty broken arm, a ganked wrist, a 6" piece of titanium w/6 screws, and a dark purple left ankle later: I never tried it again. In fact, I credit that trick for ending my chance at a freestyle career. BE CAREFULL if you attempt this!!! This may be the most difficult and dangerouse trick you could ever attempt on a stand up. It is sweet if you can pull it off though. Blasters are another story. This is childsplay on a fixed steer craft.

Did one of these on accident last year on my blaster. Kicked funny off a peak and my feet coming out of the straps surprised me enough to make me let go of the bars also. Instead of full extension, it was more of a flailing motion as I realized I would be landing on the ski.

Anyone try rotating parallel with the ski while separated? Like a jump spin. Perhaps that is another trick...I'm reading through them today.
