Need a laptop for college. Looking to spend no more then around a grand.

Some necessaries:

2 1/2 hour battery life (more is better always!)
Windows XP (I dont want vista)
WiFi (at least G)
80 Gb or higher*
512 mb RAM

* = very much preferred but not necessary

Anyone got any recommendations? (I know its a matter of time before couch chimes in). My school gives me a discount (not sure how much) as well. Looking for the best bang for the buck of course, remember Im a poor college student now :Banane01:

I've never had an apple and dont feel like learning a new opsys right now. However, the Acer looks pretty good, however I cant find any reviews? Having not dabbled in the laptop market at ALL prior to this, usually I like to do my research as far as buying blind goes for brands. Thanks guys!

You can get a used HP Pavilion DV1000 for around 500 bucks and it has all those features with some great reviews.

dude seriously, the os on a mac is nothing alien and freaky. everybody says that and i dont get it. the biggest difference off the bat is instead of having ur apps icons on the desktop, u can keep them in the "dock" hidden down at the bottom of the screen. thats probably the one thing that i have seen that confuses ppl. THATS IT. they still work just like a PC only much more smoothly and seamlessly. other than the fact that they are a bit pricey, i dont see how anyone would choose a pc over a mac if they have tried both. PLEASE, for ur sake, consider it. go find one and play with it for a bit. u will see what i mean. oh yeah, ive had mine for almost a year now and the only pop up window ive had is the one that tells me im low on battery. if u have ever messed with an ipod u have seen how smoothly they operate. and how sleek the design of them is. thats only the tip of the iceburg when it comes to how nicely a mac functions. they really THINK about the user when they design their stuff. BTW my ex girlfriend had an acer and the power supply went bad after not very long.

PS

do u really think i would sit here and write this novel of a post if i didnt REALLY think that a mac would make u happier by far? i dont even know u.

I have owned and used both Mac's and PC's, as a matter of fact I have an iMac pedestal for sale if anyone is interested, and they both have advantages and disadvantages over each other. PC's crash, and guess what, so do Macs. Macs also have hardware components go out.

If you don't have a specific need for a PC, I'd definitely recommend trying a Mac, because some people will like them more and be more comfortable with them. However, don't let someone talk you into a Mac just because they are a Mac fanatic.

Back in the day, Mac's were superior to PC's. Off the shelf Macs used higher end hardware on them such as SCSI drives, motherboards with faster bus speeds and high performance graphics cards. The off the shelf PC's weren't in the same league. But today, there is no longer that distinction.

I will say that Mac's advertising is far superior.

i agree. pcs get the job done just like a mac will no doubt about it. and i have read about hardware crapping out. but which is more likely to make the user happy? i think u know which one. and of course i know that a mac will crash eventually, but i think like a bagillion pcs will crash first. (knock on wood)

The one that works better for them. For me, after owning an iBook, 2 G4's and an iMac, a PC makes me happier. For you, it's a Mac. For Meatball, it's which ever works for him.

Arent the best features of a Mac the graphics programs and the fact that they are virtually invisable on the web therefore not subjected to most virusis? Other than that the PC/ Windows programs are more user friendly and office compadable? This is what I have always heard any way as I have never used a Mac, but the invisable feature does appeal to me however the price does not.
