I've never heard of that place. What's it like?

its an old gravel pitt down next to the river. its secluded and quite (well at least till we get there.) its at the end of a little dirt road about a total of 5 to 6 miles off the highway. there are no houses surrounding it so there are nodocks to stay away from. and nobody to complain. theres room for at least 30 vehicles with trailers in the main parking area. and its actually a michigan state recreation area so its legal to be there, but weve been ridin it for 3 years now and have never seen dnr on the water once!!

UPDATE: to better serve all of those riders from out of town that dont want to pay for a hotel it is quite possible to work out camping in my back yard. i live appx 10 minutes from the "pitts"
we are also possibly going out to pidgeon lake to ride lake michigan on sun.
will list hotels in the area in the next day or so.

I got a question for ya. Is this place open to the public to go to ski whenever they want or is it just allowed during the pitt pass weekend? I am assuming its allowed all of the time since you are putting your skis in it. Would it be a good place to learn? I am picking up my ski next weekend. I just won it on ebay tonight. I got a funny story. Last night my roommate and I went to check out the pits to see if it would be suitable for a big bonfire/party. We went there and checked it out and it was awesome. He went to turn around so we could head back and get everyone and he wasn't looking and drove his grand prix right into some ruts that were used by offroaders. He buried it and we got stuck. Eventually while we were trying to get a ride back to the apartment to get my Jeep to pull him out, six guys came out of the woods in a truck with a quad and a dirtbike on it. The seven of us ended up pushing it out with my roommate driving it. They kept askin "who in the hell would go two-trackin in a grand prix" lol.... but it was just my roommate not watching where he was going. We ended up having a huge bonfire out there last night. That spot is amazing. The lake is huge and it was like glass. There is nobody around either. It was a great time. I have decided that is where I will be learnign to ski when I pick it up next week.

EDIT: Thong Bandit do you know a kid named Zach? My friend Zach was the only person that had heard of the place and he said it was because he had a friend that jetskis there all the time. Could it be you????

check this out i emailed klq my flier and they answered today that due to insurane reasons they could not sponsor the event but that they would pass the flyer along to all the disk jockeys to read and promote it on the air staring in june and might even come out for a quick remote broadcast and talk to some of the riders to help promote the growth of our sport.

You should contact local recreation vehicle places.

Powers Motor Sports is somewhat near Allendale. You could call some marinas, etc.

I go to GVSU, and live in Spring Lake. I drive by the pits almost every day.

I just picked up a 87 JS550 right near the new light in Eastmanville. I should have it ready to go by then, if not, I will just jump on my 95 750SX.

Sounds like a pretty good time though.

I think with the right promotions, you could make it quite a spectator event. Sure you can get riders, but to have spectators that would be icing on the cake.

KLQ is a great start. WGRD sponsored a car show at GVSU, so maybe you should contact them. They have a sweet van that has a sound system that can play to an audience of 300. They seem to be much more willing to support the community.

I would also try and get WZZM to back you up.

Went out there again today and drove around in my jeep exploring for several hours. It was a great time and we found lots of kickass spots. Who was it that asked if there was a waterski tournament before. I think there may have been. I found a smaller lake today while exploring that had a bouy course set up and a huge jump in the middle of the lake!!! We had another bonfire out there tonight also. It was a ********load of fun!!!

i'm 99% sure they used to/do have waterski tournaments out there. i know i went to a few back in the day in allendale at gravel pits (something about they are great waterski lakes cause waves dissipate with gravel shore really well, and the water is really murky-like which makes the slalom guys happy)

no people, no wakes, no sea walls, no cops... perfect... but if they are out while we are, believe me, there will be confrontation.

There is a beach on the opposite side but that doesnt do any good. Don't let the murky water or the gravel turn you away. Just bring yourself a small buoy so you dont have to beach it (thats what I do). The water isnt bad even though its murky. I ride there 2-3 times a week. Its a great little spot. The other day when I was out there there were several wakeboard boats out for some huge wake also.... and no DNR within miles

from indiana just come up 131 to exit 86b...yeah i think its b when you start getting into grand rapids the highway will open up to 3 lanes just grab the center lane and when you get to like exit 83-84ish jump into the left lane cause the exit 86 you want is the second left hand exit you'll come to the first is #84 its i-196 west towards holland...not 96 the ramp is a pretty tight corner i think 30mph once your on there get in the center lane the (right lane will dissapear pretty quick) your gonna curve to the left then the right and get off at exit 75/lake michigan drive. (m45) from there just go straight..your gonna go through standale..then it becomes pretty country.. after you pass gvsu youll come into allendale i think its like 10-12 miles down lk. drive....the speed limit will be 50mph once in allendale you wanna turn right at the stop light. (68th) ave. theres a ADMIRAL station on the corner. head north up 68th ave. to the first light (warner st.) make a left. go down a couple of miles..the road curves a little to your right and drops down a little hill kind of then comes right back up at the top there is a little dirt road to your right. S. CEDAR ST. make that right and go till it ends. follow the curve to your left. then just keep going even though you'll think your lost your not. your already there..wont be able to miss it....

1. missing intake grate
2. snapped steering cable
3. crack umi pole.

It was a kick ass time.

I finally went over my ski tonight.
1. Handlpole is cracked all around that one side.
2. The grate is worthless. It took out the inserts w/ it also.
3. I might be able to rig the steering cable for the time being.
4. I have no new cracks. the reinforcement worked out good.

I have pics of the stuff but i took them w/ my camera phone so now i have to go work on how to get them off the phone..

I am not sure. I know it is the same pass as Pigeon Lake / Port Sheldon Launch. I emailed the DNR to find out if State Park stickers are the same, but I dont actually expect a response form them. I will post it if they reply.

The Green Lake pass is the same pass as the Pigeon Lake/Port Sheldon pass. So I guess that the stickers you have will work both places. Whats this about having to pay though. Ive went swimming there three times in the past week/week and a half and havent seen anyone there collecting money or anything. I havent launched my ski there though because it is down :frown: .

I have a "launch" sticker. and a state park sticker. the "launch sticker is for green lake and holland, the state park is for gun lake etc. and now I have one for Mecosta county too. At this rate I wont beable to see out my windsheild.:bs2:

I still need to get an ORV sticker (although that goes on the back), and I will probably end up having to buy another boat launch sticker when I go to silver lake to launch the skis when we are done on the dunes. Does anyone know if you are allowed to pull a trailer on the dunes? That would be sweet to be able to take the two skis on the dunes and drive them to the beach and carry them in.

thinkdunes leads you right to the other one. Thanks for the links. I didnt know there were so many other beaches around there. It doesnt say if you are allowed to launch at the beach in the ORV area. I am assuming you are not allowed to. But whats to stop us from throwing a ski in the back and carrying it in. That would be sweet
