I think you can count the Cleveland crew in.

My guess is between 9th and 13th.

This will be a kick ass event, they are giving us the ocean front, right in front of the main strip. The block area will work out to be more beach area then Daytona.

This will also have couch event which includes a ride to the Chesapeake Light tower 16 miles off the coast, dolphin watch and we allso get the winter whales usually 300 yards off shore.

We don't know yet exactly where the defined ride zone will be for the event. Most likely a couple blocks north of the inlet (http://www.x-h2o.com/vbgooglemapme.php?lat=36.82979027942489&lng=-75.97018539905548&zoom=16). Like Beach said, the ride area hasn't been completely confirmed yet. We are trying to get as much beach as we can :cool2: We will be also trying to work a deal with a hotel/hotels in the area. Within the last 2 weeks we have got a verbal agreement for multiple city lots nearby.

I hope that within the very near future, we will be able to announce who some of our "Corporate Kanunas" will be also:biggthumpup:!

Question.....How is everyone getting their skiis on the beach??? And are they changing the "No beaching" law for the weekend???:brap:

beachjunkey
06-12-2007, 03:53 PM
BS should have the answers you are looking for. I'm not sure what they're working out for launching/recovering yet, but we wouldn't be having an event if we couldn't beach that weekend

Conquistador
06-13-2007, 12:43 AM
Beaching will not be an issue. We are currently working on setting up a shuttle system to get skis to the beach. We are also exploring the idea of setting up a shuttle system to get people to the beach. 1 big goal is to be able to shuttle a ski to the ride area without the owner having to leave the ski. Also, there will be a boat ramp available in Rudee Inlet at Owls Creek nearby to drop couches in at.

There are two big events for couches during WaveDaze.
Saturday will be the "Virginia Beach Coastline Cruise": A leisurely ride up & down the VB coastline in the Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay.\

Sunday will be the "Light Tower Challenge": a 26mile round trip endurance ride to the Chesapeake Light Tower (13 miles off-shore). It will be a reasonably fast pace depending on ocean conditions.

More Info coming soon on www.myspace.com/wavedaze We will have an official website set up soon also.

Conquistador

We will couches/boats guiding the ride with gps on them. I am not a big fan of requiring helmets for the challenge because it would be more dangerous with a helmet on. I have based this opinion on the same reasons that the AWA has defeated helmet laws in the past. Although the ride may have a quick pace, it is not a race.

Helmets will be required for all persons in the freeride area tho.

HA HA HA HA HA.......................

oh wait.... HA HA HA HA HA.......................

ok, I'm fine now.....

Did you map the ocean floor and/or have control over the currents in the ocean????

If not... You have no freaking idea where a sand bar is in Florida or VA... Last time I checked, Va is about 500 miles away from here and has the same same ocean floor as Daytona (sand). So why would it be any different?...

Quit lying to people to make them feel reassured about not hitting bottom.... If you ride hard and go big you will hit bottom, don't blame it on Florida, balme it on gravity or something....

Go pick up a book on waves and how the ocean floor effects a breaking wave... you will see that you are completely wrong

You will hit bottom in Va just like you will in Florida....

Quit hatin'. We all know Virginia water is less dense so the buoyancy naturally protects you from hitting bottom. You just gotta watch out for those extra dense spots that suck the right side of the ski down an extra inch. :mischievous:

I think his point was we have less unexpected sandbars than Florida. But really the same general rule applies to whole East Coast: Everyone's just gotta realize they'd better know what they are getting into if they want to dumper-jump or duck dive if we have a small surf day.

Beach is right, although Oct/Nov is typically the best time of year here, its all nature. In early Oct I usually ride with no wet suit in most cases. If we have an unusually cool Sept then a shorty might be required. In other words, the northern guys will likely ride with no wet suit and the southern guys will likely want a spring/shorty.

basically, bring your ski, bring a good attitude, & ride!:Banane09: If you want to participate in the freeride, just show up with your ski. It's not a bad idea to bring some tools with you either. Plan on having fun & meeting alot of new people. there is 8-9 hours of time each day where you can ride as much as you want & eat some good food. If you have a medium size to large couch, check out the coastline cruise & check out the light tower challenge. Both are unique events that I believe most freerides do not have. We want to make sure that, no matter what kind of ski your ride, you can come & enjoy yourself! Once, the ride area is shut down, you party your ass off!:bigok:

heres the deal I said on GOOD days if you are out more than 75 yards your not gonna hit bottom in VA.Im very aware of the depth of water any certain height wave breaks in. Our break usually breaks closer than 75 yrds from shore.and it takes a good swell to break further out than 75 yrds, but the water will be way overhead in depth pass that.Rudee inlet is completely different than the inlets ive riddin in fl, There are spots at Villano 500 yrds off shore you can stand up in waist high water, the boat traffic is regulated by bouys WAY out there, here in ANY size boat, once you are out of the inlet there is NO place you will run aground anywhere within miles of the inlet. beyond that I could care less, these will be the areas we are riding within.

so nah it wasnt going that far out on a limb, going out would be like saying "If anyone does hit bottom nick will pay for it" JJ

Bathymetry and breaking waves 101

The depth of the water will be 1.3 times the size of the wave. So if the wave was 4ft it will break in 5.2ft of water depending upon the bathymetry wind direction and currents.Factors

A very gradual sloping grade will release the energy slower and more gradual causing the wave to break in deeper water. ie. Daytona
A shelf/ledge will cause the wave to release it's energy all at once causing the wave to be more vertical and break in shallow water. ... Kinda like how "the hole" breaks in very shallow water compared to Ponce which is a sand bottom w/ a more gradual slope...
Onshore wind will cause a wave to break in deeper water beacuse it pushes the wave over before it's peak
Offshore wind cause the wave to break in more shallow water due to the wind holding up the face and keeping it from breaking at it's peak.
Currents/tides will also effect the way a wave breaks too

Ok! thanks to nick I can not have anyone teach me anything else today! One thing a day, that's the limit. After that, the headaches set in.:nono: Anyway, I was sitting wandering what the ******** bathymetry was & decided to look it up. (them damn engineers with their big brains & what not:smashfreakB:)

Just to clarify:
"Bathymetry is the underwater equivalent to altimetry. The name comes from Greek βαθυς, deep, and μετρον, measure. In other words, bathymetry is the study of underwater depth, of the third dimension of lake or ocean floors. A bathymetric map or chart usually shows floor relief or terrain as contour lines, and may additionally provide surface navigational information."

all good info, also take into account the outside break here on a good swell day is well overhead in the sets at 75 yrds offshore or more, then also consider the distance you travel after you leave the wave. add a few feet of depth the longer you travel,it just keeps getting deeper and deeper here,it doesnt go back shallow again in the inlets like fl 100s of yards out.

It only happens in Florida??? Wow... that's news to me...

Va beaches have no sand bars even though it's a sand bottom.... Ok cool, I will make a note of that... Also the fact that you travel further in Va when you jump too... these are such interesting "facts" Do you live in some wierd place devoid of the laws of physiscs???

I can't speak for Torr, but I know that it does get pretty deep after you get 75-100 yards out. Of, course I haven't been able to stab my 550 yet:banghead:, so I don't exactly know how deep. I do know that we found a sand bar (still too deep to swim down to) about 200-300 off shore down in Croatan (about 2-3 miles south of the oceanfront).

no shoals like fl here, but uhhh where in my post does it say something bout traveling further out jumping in VA.there is a reason crap loads of nose plants happen to fl riders, that are riding our lowly sub slutty level at best, lol. has nothing to do with amplitude and more to do with its shallow when ever and where ever in the INLETS! Only few lawn darts ever here and always on the inside of 50 yards. the bottom is different here as well as trade winds and inlets. you think every beach break and shoal on the east coast is the same? How many times have you rode our inlet again? you hit the bottom here 75 yards + and it will be a miracle even with your best Tony Montana back flip :brap:

i think that's because the continental shelf comes closer to VB then it does in Daytona, and the slope is more extreme in VB than off the coast of FL.

of course, i'm no oceanographer so i could be way off on this...

Txj. That has alot to do with it. We also have much different inlets than fl. Once you come out of the inlet we dont have shallow spots where you can see breaking waves 100s of yards offshore.

I think Lance meant Vb is only second to sebby as far as a SOMEWHAT reliable depth with decent swell.

Virginia:
We will add the map soon (no really,, yes yes honest!).
Like most of the eastern coast of the United States this is a long stretch of beach break that is broken up by jetties, piers and inlets. And like the whole of the eastern seabord it is not as consistent as the West Coast and the waves for the most part are not near as powerful. The breaks can turn on and offer quality beach break peaks but cannot be compared to the points and reefs of the west coast. This region suffers from a large continental shelf that decreases the power of the waves. Massive temperature variations as well. On the plus side the majority of surfers in the region are good and decent folks that for the most part are far removed from the aggro scene so evident at many southern California beaches...very little localism horse******** is in evidence.

unless there is a perpetual static wave in 12ft. water with glass on either side on every coast around the globe and the weather is sunny all year round with water temps in the 70's and air temps in the 80's you will never be able to please the masses. people will always go back and say the local spot is always better.

it's like the freestyle/freeride vs. racing thing. don't knock something unless you've tried..... unless you've traveled to another spot and experienced the riding, don't critique it based on what carts and maps tell you because things can always change , if things didn't change riding would be monotnous day in an day out.... go experience something new go exploring travel somewhere even if it is just a few hour car ride from where you are, you never know it just might surprise you.

guys no need to start a pissing match.... this is getting like an east coast west coast thing..... who gives a flying rats ass... ya'll are in the sport to enjoy it, not because it is a popularity contest and my freeride is better than your freeride.....go to an event with an open mind, if you don't like they way something was run, make a suggestion on how to make it better or better yet start a ride in your own area. thats how rides like the texas ride, lanier ride, daytona ride, wave daze, FSF, and all the other rides get started. people want to bring others together for the enjoyment of a common cause

nick, i know you have traveled and believe me i would kill to have been able to travel as much as you have and seen these locations.

but on the flipside you have people that have the mindset that they live in this little bubble that think they have the best break around but yet complain because they don't want to drive to experience something new

i don't have the luxury of being able to just travel when i please as some seem to think.... i make plans to do so but schiot happens and even the best layed plans fail.... i had planned on racing this season but guess what i have had 15K paperweight sitting at the dealership off an on since the middle of june.

But we are getting close to having something really cool with these SURF free rides on the east coast. Tona is cool and all but one surf freeride a yr just aint cuttin it. If we ever want to really grow this thing, guys from the south are gonna have to get a RV like everyone else does and man up and make the trip to support this movement.Rent one or something. We are coming down south in a RV pulling a 22 flat bed. its gonna be pretty cheap split up among all of us.

Anyone wanna give two extremely poor girls  a ride from the airport over to the Hilton, or should we call a limo instead (no sweat, lol, we like limos, but all the same...either way, let us know). Oh, we is Juliana (first chick, bottom front and center), and btw, she def needs a "caregiver", lol (Stricky...your designated for Sebby the following weekend, cuz she wants you since you're retired, lol), and a b1 (as well as myself)! :fing02: (Cabanna boyz will do when not in the surf, lol)

Big, make that HUGE props go to Captain BS and Allen for setting up such a well organized event. I lost count of how many skis and riders were actually able to show up but it doesn't really matter, it was a big success. The on-lookers and passer-bys seemed to welcome us and were so pleased to sit back and watch us ride with their families.

Thank you Dave for coming down and shooting photos all weekend.

I personally had an awesome time that equaled my fun at last years Rager, without the drive. We could not have asked for nicer weather. The surf was pretty decent too.

Nick, props to you for sending good Freeride karma our way, it worked. Few injuries, a little carnage and an all-around great event.

For the visitors from far away, thank you too. Your taking a chance made things that much better!

See you all next year.:Banane19:

Zimmy bought a B1 from _______ and the back was held together and patched with 5lbs of epoxy (no glass) The patched crack wrapped around the corners and the ski opened up like a clam.

Zimmy bought a SN from _______ and the front cover was glued down to the deck with resin and a cut up pair of blue jeans.

yeah it was that B1 that opened up on its maiden voyage.
its all good man, i reinforced it. i think i could drop from 20 feet onto the beach now and it would even flinch.
the on i used over the weekend was a different on though, so now that hull has started to give out, but it wasnt reinforced yet.

Since the Sluts didn't show up and the Junkies always show up in Daytona.

Hangtime, you hit it perfect with that one. We go to the northern surf rides and southern FL surf rides. In an attempt to push the growth of freeride to next level,Ive had a absolute blast at every surf freeride ive been too.this is why we work right,so we can enjoy ourselves.Life is too short to miss a event like these.

the success of the freeride movement depends largely on these type events,it is totally up to the community rather it thrives or not.I feel we need at least 3 quality SURF freerides a yr that most of us can make?

word up if this is the way you feel also?
