The only think is, I've heard "there is no surf in July at Pismo". Of course, I've only heard this once and I'm not from there, so I have no idea. It may be that the surf is just not as big as it get in October (which was plenty for me) and that a small surf day in July at Pismo is still bigger than a good surf day at Galveston.

No surf in July in Pismo, :frown: at least that what I was told last October by several of the local people. Lots of flat water with the occasional storm surge.
Sure don't want to drive 2000 miles for flat water.

Flat out here in cali is 1-2 foot or by locals anything under 4 foot faces. but even at waist high, bigger sets do come in.. i have yet to ever see it Texas flat.. Last year it was waist to chest with head/over head sets coming in every 10 minutes or so and glassy till sunday mid morning.. But like anywhere there is always a chance of Blown out ! Wind is by far the bigger threat and can always come up out of no where.. As far as Oct. goes straight from the locals mouths is the biggest crap shoot.. its right in between the south and north swells.. a lull.. dec.-march is big wave season and you can see 10-15 foot waves.. the last few years we have been very lucky out here (blame is on global warming if you want) but there has been waves 75% of the time..
here is a few pictures from Sunday last year, looks bad huh ? (small day but still cleaner and bigger than Daytona !)

ooops... just saw this..
I believe the key to the question lies in the distance...
There is a lot that is better than a lake, however what is worth driving 2000 miles?
I guess if possible, provide quantitative data. 2-3'... 3-6'?
During the summer it is never smaller than 3' and can be up to 6'+
Is it worth a 2000 mile drive? Hmmm. Maybe.
