Minor mis-hap foaming my footholds

So I'm pourring my foam, and the right side goes smooth, almost to smooth and seemed like I didn't puor in enough foam.
Go to do the left, poor just a little larger amount, and my foothold buckles and pushes up the bottom putting a nice little crease in it.
Just need some opinions, should I:
a) grind down the bottom and reglass it?
b) glass in where the crease is, and add extra foam to the right side to compensate for the bulge?
c) just cut it out, order a new foothold and start over.

They are surfjetlouie rickter syle footholds, and I used 4lb foam.

damn:bigeyes: Did you let it pressurize too much or something? I think it's good to let some pressure build to make sure foam gets in every little crack, but you do want to let the pressure release.

I'm definitely not an expert when it comes to footholds cuz I've only done one set with a ton of help from a friend, but I do know that expanding foam can have some serious pressure forces.

When we did mine we just put pieces of tape over the holes and let it pressurize and after it popped the tape off we left it off. I don't know if thats what you're supposed to do, but I'm pretty sure all crevices were filled with foam and they are super strong.

I guess you could cut the bottom out of the foothold, shave the foam down, then glass over it, but I might just start over and do it the right way so you don't have sealing issues and wet foam down the road.

im no pro at footholds or anything but I think I would cut it out and lay fiberglass over it.

just grind the bottom flush. leave some kind of a lip around the hold. and lay a few layers across the hold then maybe one layer from hold to hold across the tray.

but if it doesn't bother your foot getting into the hold i wouldn't really worry about it. your gonna have foam and turf over it which will compensate for that buckle

Its those junky knock off thin POS amateur made footholds. They must be real crap if foam pressure did that!!

I've felt that I needed to reinforce the 2 sets of 24/7's that I've installed, and I did!

Sorry man, but I'd grind that open and flush/level and glass over it all.

Please tell me that those are not some kind of plastic...
Is that "suppose" to be gel coat, fiberglass with polyester/vinylester?

Seriously, I would reinforce the tops( area where your foot sits) of both of those since you already have them installed and for sure go across like SFL said.. going all the way in the foot hold with some good mat or biaixal. You dont want those to crack under your turf and take water in.

I just want to see someone do it right the first time and not have problems later...

so glad the ones I make are thincker than any I have seen. biaxial and chopped. Better do it right the first time, cause that is a lot of work to do it over when it breaks.

theyre gelcoat and polyester and very thin.

id grind the crease down and glass over it. youre going to want to lay biaxial from one hold to the other anyway. itll be fine.

The ones we make are more like Frito's really, just the right consistancy, I would go thick then grind to desired thickness before going too thin only because countersinking can be a beotch in the thinner ones IE pringles consistancy.

It this case you can compinsate w/ underlayment (cheesey method) or grind out and glass over (overcooked steak w/ A1 sauce method). :biggrin:

I installed the same foot wells and that did the same thing. As you can see by the pics I used allot of fiberglass to reinforce and to fix the same bulge form foam. I have been ridding these foot wells now for half a year and I like them. They were just a little more work to install

I have these same footholds. All I have left to do is to lay some sheets and foam. After seeing this, I think I will reinforce them a little bit before I foam!

I only take what foam is needed to be removed to instal footholds and never refoam. The footholds in my boat are as they were installed 5 yrs ago as are Toby's, Keefer's, Moondance's, Stingray's, My son's, Yama-freak, Kyles, YAMACAT'S 2 boats and so on and so on that Toby and I installed. If you take an extra 5 mins taking foam out for foot holds you can save Lots of $$$ and time in end. Unless of course you are completeley defoaming to begin with.

Actually, I think it's my inexperience that messed them up more than anything. I don't blame Surfjetlouie at all. They were only $80.

FWIW I did the same thing with a set of, lets just say high quality footholds.
I won't even mention the brand because it wasn't their fault at all. I capped off the foam fill hole and learned the hard way how much pressure that foam builds up if it has no place to go.

Quick question, could I use just cloth in the part I grind out, or bi-axil mat and what weight. Right now I just have 4 oz cloth.
