View Full Version : Excessive wear on driveshaft?

You can't really tell in this pic but there is noticeable wear on my driveshaft about 10" from the tip of the spline. Is there anything I can do to prevent this or is it normal? I probably have less than 30hrs on the ski - 05 sj.

I don't think it is a wear mark as there is nothing back there for it to rub on. I've also seen this mark on most of the superjet driveshafts. My guess is that it is from the manufacturing process when Yamaha makes the shaft.

I don't know if it's true or not, but someone told me that was a weld mark... sometimes they are not so smooth and they'll cut your finger if you slide it along the shaft.

Why did you pull the shaft? Was it making noise or just changing props?

Make sure you grease all the splines well before reassembly. Failing to do so will result in rapid wear!:bigeyes:

Ya some of the ones I've seen really look like a weld that has been ground down.

When you reassembling check inside the intermediate shaft to make sure the two O-rings are in place. The shaft will also wear quicker if these are not there.

Noob question - how do I check? Is the intermediate shaft the piece that mounts to the firewall and has a grease point? If the o-rings are not there I'll try and contact the local yamaha dealer. It's been less than six months so it should be under warranty right? Maybe they'll exchange my busted bendix too... :haha:

Sorry, for some reason I thought you had your ski completely disassembled. Next to impossible to see the end of that shaft when it is installed. If you didin't take them out then they should still be in there.

Its absolutely worth checking for O rings. I have worn splines on both the intermediate shaft and the drive shaft because a couple of owners ago my ski was put together without O rings. Bad enough I will be posting in the wtb section. :banghead:

Save yourself the trouble if they are not there, for 6 or 7 bucks while your already torn down its worth it. MHO

It's only 3 bolts but it is up to you. There's a 99% chance they are in there unless someone replaced the shaft and never put the O-rings in.

I bought it off the show room floor this past Fall so they should be good. But I'd rather take a look now than later. Thanks everyone!

Where exactly is the oring supposed to be? I reached down in both ends and didn't feel anything.

They would be on the intermediate shaft where the pump shaft goes in on the inside.
