I am in a mid winter workout rut. It is crappy out and cold and I need motivation to get my bum out more and put down better quality milage.
I know there has to be other people that jog and run that will be there.
Just for fun I am by no means a competitive level runner, a hand full of screws and metal plates in my leg have a lot to do with that. Anyway, I say we get some kind of challenge with some form of bet going on.
Since it is the beginning of summer a nice 5k would be a good distance and most people should be able to do that.
Any takers?
Ideas for what is at stake?

Depending on how many people you can get to join, start a pool.

Those who complete the run enter in a raffle for the pot.

$20 entrance fee/person?

I'm game.

How about we put titles to our ski's on the line. :cool2:

No really I'm not a fast runner either. I definitely won't be the first across the line, but that would be some good motivation to work for until then.

Let's make it one of those 5K's where everyone has to chug a beer at the end of it. :beerchug:

not bad idea. Maybe make it $xx to enter and you get XXX number of raffle tickets for per place LIke 1st 100 tickets 2nd 50 all depending on how many people enter? That way the money goes to something other then my pocket :cool2:

the 5k is a great idea... if nothing else, just for the fun of it... but instead of a beer at the end, there should be a mandatory beer chug every 1k. its awesome watching people run/puke.

kinda like keg softball, take a hit from the keg at every base?

I would rather be getting wet than sweating in a 5k, but if there was others partisipating and trash talking, I'd be down with it.
What you say saki? I'll even push you half way in your wheelchair.

Powder
01-30-2007, 03:30 PM
imho, i don't really think it will materialize tho... which is a good thing. i'd rather be doing other stuff that weekend. :cat37:

DAMN making excuses already :pokey:
sounds like the talk of a beardless gimp

Materialize or not I'll still run every day while I am there. It would be more fun and help give me a goal to shot for if there is a challenge. I also happen to know some of the ladies going are runners and i thought i might be nice if there was something for everyone. You know help make the non-riders more a part of the event. But mostly it will force me to train harder if the trash talk gets good.

The camp ground is big enough to run the entire 5k within it's boarders.
If you are serious about doing this, (I feel it's a great Idea) Let me know before next weeks meeting with the Army Corp. This could be set-up with a locals runners club to bring more people into the event?

Powder

Since High School no matter how hungover I am i force myself to run at least a mile, sounds bad but it chases the hangover away. Plus you get to puke on your neighbors lawn-driveway-open convertible, you know whatever is convenient. :puke:

Come on gimpy :crutches: If Forest can run why can't you

Awesome can't wait to see this new camp grounds. I am not a serious runner anymore and this is more for fun then anything. But HEY if you think it might help with local exposure and getting a club involved great lets do it! If they want to show up saki too that's cool with me we can wave to him from the finish line. Give me a shout Paul if you want some extra help to make this part of the event.

I love running. It's one of the purest competitive sports. It may not be that entertaining to watch. But theres no BS about who has better equipment or of there was an unfair call or not.

During a race, there's only you and your competitors, and when its over, you can step off the track knowing you owned them physically and mentally and none of them can beat you in that race. One of the greatest feelings you can have.

Like they say, pain is temporary, glory is forever.

Why run? Never gonna beat the kenyans, they have it in their blood, it would take a few generational evolutions for me to over take them. I'll stick to swimming, it's better for the back anyways

Relatedly, someone at my school set the new state and I think regional record for the mile. Ran it in 4:15 I think. Thats insane!!! He's runs something like 80 miles a week! Go figure, even though he's a pretty dull minded kid (read: stupid, Level 3 classes-NO AP's) he got full ride offers to both standford and harvord, plus numerous others I cant remember and dont want to/care to. I hate him...

Yeah sorry, i figured you were, but I haven't raced in two years and yesterday went to a good track meet to watch my old college running buddies, and warmed up with them and such. It got me fired up.

Actually I've beat a NAIA national champion kenyan, but to his defense it wasn't his strong event. But still pretty fun .

4:15 is fast in HS but I would of thought the state record would be better than that. Maybe just the school? 4:15-16 typically is a common winning time for a state meet so I'd think the record would be lower but maybe not.

nikeplus (http://www.nike.com/nikeplus/)
There is a sensor you put in your shoe and a receiver you plug into your nano (only works on nano for now) and it tracks how far you go, pace, and calories burned. After your run when you sync your nano to iTunes it uploads the data to your account on Nike. Then you can log into the account and see all your workout information, set goals track progress etc. I read a lot of reviews and it has really good feedback and is about 98% accurate. Oh and you don't need the special shoes they try to sell you a lot of people, from what i read, just tuck the sensor in their shoe some place or there are little pouches you can get on ebay for $3 or so. One of the features of the Nke account is you can challenge people to things like first one to run 100miles or fastest miles time, things like that.

I know they have GPS chips as well that will track your route, time, dist travelled, ect and are accurate to a football field distance for a marathon. Nike thing sounds pretty cool, expecially since you can use it with other brands of shoes.

Yeah that sucks that it's only available for the Nano. I was hoping it would also work for the Video, but my girlfriend said it will never be available for the Video because you're not even supposed to run with the Video because the Video has an actual hardrive that jogging can screw up.

We still run with our Video anyways and it's still working.

There is a watch version for the Nike+ coming out in the next month or so ($200 ish). You can get a refurished nano directly from Apple for $89 right now.Apple (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=32DAAC51&nclm=Certified) As for the not jogging with a video ipod they say that but i have been running with mine for about a year with no problems. I wear it on my arm and there is a lot less impact there then if it were on your belt or something.
