View Full Version : I finally got a superjet!

Well, I finally bought a sqarenose, it's a basketcase because the P/O got water into the engine (it wasn't running), let it sit, then tore it apart to find that one, maybe two of the main bearings had rusted. It's got a coffman's exhuast, scoop grate, grooved ride plate, skat-trak 14/17 (I think) impeller, ocean pro flame arrestor, and Aftermarket (4* ? ) bars. I paid $500 for it with a rolling shop stand and a gallon of 2-stroke oil. I'm planning on doing some porting (holy crap you were right about yamaha port matching Matt!) maybe front exit exhuast, foot hols ( Waterdawg customs, unless somebody advises me otherwise for my size 12s), reinforcing and filling in the scratches on the hull, shaving the fuel door, scupper, bilge, hoodstraps. limiter rope, and maybe shaving a spare head I have...

I'll need all the luck I can get! Ihave way too much to do this winter because I'm building a 4x4 Toyota, and trying to get my snowmobile to work right!

Congrats Luke!!!

Couple of things: If you'd like to try the Waterdawg holds, I got them in my garage (uninstalled).
The port matchup is bad, yes. However, what you got pictured is the exhaust port on a 650. The sides can and should be ground to match. The height is done that way purposely though.
I Have raised the height about 1mm on those ports with success. There are a few good pointers to porting the 650 cylinder specifically...drop me a PM or email and we can discuss it. :sneaky:

Also, if you need parts or just help with the Superjet, let me know...i've been around a few.

No, I still have both the kawasakis. Wanna buy one?:haha: The "if I ever get to it" is gonna be the hard part...

Okay, here's the crank. I hosed all of the bearings down with wd-40, and found rust coming out of the flywheel and output end bearings. The middle ones came out pretty clean, and none of the bearings have any slop yet.

Okay, I finally got a chance to work on this beauty, I (almost) gutted it and sanded down the ribs to make room for reinforcement.

I briefly entertained the idea of buying that 750 from you so I could put it in my X2 but then I realized I did not have the money. Do you still have that pipe? If you do I still want to get it from you.

Okay, now I know why everyone whines about deturfing. It sux.

suva
12-22-2006, 06:37 PM
I used a wire wheel on an angle grinder to get most of the turf off, then scraped
some more off with a gasket scraper, then hosed it down with GOOF OFF and pressure washed it. Worked pretty good. I'm planning on reinforcing the tray, should I lay mat on the bottom and the sides of the tray, or will just the bottom be sufficient?

12-22-2006, 08:38 PM
On the square you'll want to reinforce the tray, and reinforce the 90 degree angle where the tray/rails meet.

Dang! I was hoping to get out of some sanding. Oh well, my resin/cloth isn't supposed to be here till jan. 2nd anyway.

Footholds came today, took about a week. Is this how the enclosure is supposed to fit? BTW, they're the Waterdawg REVs.

Footholds are about ready to install... I had to order some 5200, should be here this afternoon. An angle grinder with sanding disk takes the foam out fast. Also, my footholds weren't even close to clearing the exhuast tube, so out she came.

While I was waiting for my glue, I started on the one way/scupper tube install. I'm mounting a one way in the firewall so I can easily remove or replace it.

suva
01-08-2007, 02:28 AM
Poured and sanded foam in the bondline, a little goes a long ways. Foam may also be the messiest thing in the world to sand.

suva
01-08-2007, 02:32 AM
I also glued in the footholds, it was kind of a pain to get them sucked into the tray sides. I got a little grinder-happy cutting out the holes for the footholds, so I have a little extra fiberglass work coming my way.:arms:

What made you use 5200 over glassing them in?

suva
01-08-2007, 03:09 AM
What made you use 5200 over glassing them in?\
I couldn't find another mixing container after I foamed. That and I'm lazy.

suva
01-08-2007, 04:18 AM
Okay, I decided to be a little more resourceful, and i'm not THAT lazy, so I pulled the holds out, cleaned off the still-wet 5200 and reinstalled them with epoxy resin.:clown:

RiverRat
01-08-2007, 04:46 AM
To fill in the gaps when I installed X-holds I used epoxy resin and 404 filler. Mixed it up into a thick paste and went around the edges w/ a 2in strip of glass. The 404 also has very good adhesive properties and allows you to shape the excess with a sander.

suva
01-09-2007, 03:06 AM
First layer of glass, I used woven cloth strips on the edges of the holds and a layer of biaxial mat on the tray. BTW, US composites' medium epoxy resin cures really slow at 50-65*, I wish I would have gotten the fast stuff.

Is this common that the WD footholds hit exhaust tube? Or did you instal too far forward. Did you replace exhaust tube or are you going front exhaust only?

suva
01-09-2007, 05:03 PM
Is this common that the WD footholds hit exhaust tube? Or did you instal too far forward. Did you replace exhaust tube or are you going front exhaust only? The waterdawg holds are pretty big, and I installed somewhat far forward. Even if I installed them further back I'm not sure it would clear.(installing them the way I did, with the bottom of the hold flush with the tray. Where they sit now the hold is blocking almost 2/3 of the exhuast tube passage. Another thing that I did that limited clearance is grinding off the lip that came on the bottom of the hold, I suppuse you could leave it so the hold sat above the tray or grind it so the rear of the hold is lower that the front. I'm going with front exhuast.

suva
01-09-2007, 05:06 PM
I Foamed the holds, glued the door shut on the nose and assembled the one way tube. 5200 is supposed to cure for a week.

The only thing I like about Christmas is the food.... and don't feel bad about being lazy, I waited two weeks before I even touched this thing.

Okay... With Matt_E's help, I ported my stock cylinder, replaced the rusty old outer bearings, removed the choke plate and plumbed the carb for a primer (I made more work for myself by getting a KEIHIN primer kit:banghead:) and assembled my engine. I also got reinforcing done on one side, but my camera broke so pics will have to wait.

Good to hear! Hey, when did you come by yesterday? I was home all day, I must have been on the couch sleeping.

All I know is I found my dremel stuff in the garage. :haha:

How'd you like my work stand for the square hull?

suva
01-28-2007, 09:35 PM
I came by about 7, I could hear your kids inside but no one came to the door so I figured you were napping. After doing one side on my ski today I decided I want to redo the foam on the other side, so I'm gonna have to get mine back from you sometime. Your work stand for the square looks great, I'm gonna have to figure out something like that for doing my handlepole mount reinforcing. Should be easy 'cause I have a couple exra skis too.

I'm pretty much done reinforcing now, I did the nose like Mike Serlin's and totally screwed up the handle pole bracket reinfocement.... I also got my hood liner removed. It only took about 20 minutes with a heat gun, air chisel, and my ridiculously strong upper body.:haha: I promise to get some pics by this weekend (of the ski, not my torso)

Here's some pics. I drilled & tapped new holes on my steering plate so I can run straight bars. At the end of the bars they are about 4" further forward than the 4* bars that the ski came with. I had to cut a couple chunks out of the handlepole pad to allow full steering movement.

Matt_E
02-08-2007, 12:31 AM
Hey! I think I need you to do that for me...if it ain't too time consuming!

Be aware that you might run into issues with the start/stop switch assembly hitting the pole.

I think we can do that... I'll just make sure I make really wide bars. Speaking of which, how wide are freestyle bars normally?
