Can we make a free ride that everyone would want to attend ?
It's about time a free ride was done with X-h2o style !! (For the riders, By the riders)
All of you guys have come up with some great idea's and I would like to thank you all !
The idea of this ride is to get as many people together from around the country as possible for a westcoast ride !!
A few things that kept coming up (from shooting/receiving PM's around on here) on setting up a X-ride seems to be..
1. Giving enough notice, dates that allow the riders/family members a chance to attend (vacation's, time off, etc.)
2. Having the riders voice their idea's and see results..
3. As few unkown's.. (no secrets, no closed door decision making)
This is why I/we came to the idea of letting it go to the boards and let ALL of you make it a X-h2o riders ride !!
These are a few issues I think we need to get this X- ride off the starting block, IF you guys want to go for it !
1. A name for the ride...
2. A date that doesn't conflict with any other events and gives the whole family a chance to attend..
3. A location..(Pismo,Mexico,?)
4. A type of event, Basic soul surfing style?, Challange?, Competition?, All of these ?, or ?
5. Team up with the east coast guys with their competion ideas and go for a double wammy ?
( I was thinking early July for a best turn out and also the fall is booked up with great events, W/F,Smashing Pismo. The spring/summer would give a better chance for everyone to attend (schools out, vacatins, etc.) and also no rides are going on out here untill the fall..
I also would like to see something to get Ross and Pete to end this double roll thing ! )
We can run a poll on here for just about everything to make it truly a X-h2o rider's ride !!
A Committee/Consultation list has been formed (below) If one is needed..
Jr. (south)
Matt_E (north)
wildman326 (Mid)
PancakePete (East)
jetskier79 (west/so. cal)
norcal ex (west/no. cal)
I will volunteer to do the running/talking/setting up, sponsor hunting or whatever needs "leg work"
We can hand over duties to people who want to take charge of an idea (party, competion, raffle, bon fire, etc.)
Thanks. Butch

That sounds like an awesome idea.
As for as the ride goes, i think mexico would be hard for some people due to flying into somewhere near and then driving. I still think if its out west you'll have less turnout due to $$$ for plane tickets and such but i think you could get a bunch more if suited everybody.
Let me know if you need some sponsors. I can maybe get my dad to throw in some money or stuff from his company. ITs not a ski related company but it will be $$$.

yeah the whole west coast thing would count me out
My brother and I were talking over dinner about hitting one big event this year, preferably on the west coast.

Hell Yeah!!!!! We definitely need a freeride on the west coast!!!!
Cali might be easier (vs. Mexico) for some people.....might make for a bigger turnout.
Lets get this going!! It would be fun as hell!!

anything westcoast pretty much counts everyone east of texas out. Its just not economical for people to travel that far for a weekend. Meet in a centralized location in the us, and go from there. That way, even the furthest drive is only 20~ hours ish.
I live in detroit, i'm 24 hours from Florida, 5 to chicago. New york is about 8. I'd go to florida, but the 3 day drive to california is just rediculous.

green is where i live, red is LA, it is 2800 miles each way. thats averages out to around 70 miles an hour for the duration of the trip
thats 5600 miles round trip and at the current price of gas its almost 900 bucks just in gas out and back for me to go to the west coast
i like the idea of a centralized free ride, i.e Texas
Galveston for me is 1500 miles
for the la people its like 1600 miles
nor cal people and new england people its about 400 miles more.
i think texas works because its a centralized location like i said before, its not like people have to drive all the way across the country and back
thats just my two cents but then again what do i know, i ride a couch.

11-23-2006, 11:11 PM
ya i didnt think about that. i couldnt fly and bring a ski. SO no west coast freeride. Texas maybe for me.

We might be able to work a Texas out, but not sure Crystal Beach is the best for surf.
It needs to be decided flat or surf.

11-23-2006, 11:17 PM
i don't mind driving but you have to take into account also some of the people going to this might also be racers and driving cross country twice, once for the free ride and once for havasu might not be feasible for them.
putting it in texas makes it less than a days drive for most people

What kind of surf does Tx. get?
nikad58
11-23-2006, 11:20 PM
Im sure alot of guys out here have more than one ski and would be happy to see it ride rather than sit !! I will let anyone ride any of my ski's anytime !! I went to Texas last year and had a blast !! I brought 2 blasters and 2 Sjs.. the gas did run alot of money but i drove it in 2 days 1800 miles/10 miles to the gallon).. We could run a fund to get some east coast guys out here !! ??
There is already a Texas ride in March also.
In the spring texas has a 80% chance of being flat (i think from watching the texas surf cam last year) and cali has a 80% chance of good waves..
It can be a week long get together also ???? with a bash on the weekend ??

Personally I would much rather drive 600 more miles if driving that far to go to the West Coast. I would not make a trip 1600 miles to ride in the Gulf. I also wouldnt make the trip alone and spend 900 in gas...I would get at least 4 to ride with my and split it to 175 a piece (very managable).
I dont like the idea of a central ride, why travel for far for flatwater? Not for me
But Cali in mid july? That i would do!

The summer will start to get pretty packed with freerides and races and contest. Especcially if Nick, Pete and the guys in Va set up the East coast contests.
Matt_E
11-24-2006, 12:09 AM
I can do spring or summer I think. Texas is a bit far though, at least for me. I don't mind driving 1000-1200 miles for good surf and lots of people from the board - but driving 2000+ miles each way for flat gulf is a bit much.
I understand that it will be hard to do for people from the east coast. Conversely, making ANY event other than the west coast is extremely hard to do for people from this side of the country.
I guess I'll need to know where it'll be and when - that will determine whether I can go or not. I will help with the organization for the northwest either way.
But Cali in mid july? That i would do!
100% agreed. JMHO, though.

11-24-2006, 12:13 AM
Ok It looks like Pismo will be better for alot of people for a free ride..
I feel that Mexico would be better if there was a competion to avoid red tape..
I think we may have to wait on a date untill the IJSBA sets their race dates..
or just say... ?? someone pick a date please !
Matt_E
11-24-2006, 12:15 AM
I think the sooner we pick a date, the easier it will be to plan for it for everyone.
I agree on California being a lot easier to do. Yeah, Mexico sounds nice, but Cali is a bit closer, I don't have to get special vehicle insurance, etc etc etc.

i thought the title of this thread was make a free ride that everyone can attend?
unless someone sticks a wave maker in the middle of galveston bay i don't think there will be a freeride that everyone can attend.

Personally I think the whole "super dooper ride" thing is just more trouble and adding tot he bucket but I'm always excited about people hosting. Lanier and Daytona both allow a complete year for riders to adjust schedules because they will be a few days from the following year's date.
Also, dont make it too complex, it spoils the fun. Lanier and Daytona are on the edge for me with all the raffeling and such. Great fun but I dont wanna feal like I'm on a time frame. Just get a location to sleep, location to ride, location to party, throw in some pretty girls and you have yourself a freeride
why travel for far for flatwater?
Not 100% of about just riding a lake. It riding with people and friends you see once in a blue moon, haning out, partying that night, and all the rest of the crap.

Can we make a free ride that everyone would want to attend ?
can & want....two different words
Personally I wouldn't be able to make a Cali ride; but the idea is fabulous. How many people cannot make the Daytona ride because they live on the west coast? Same theory goes for the east coast riders going to a west coast ride. Simple fact of location; not all people will be able to attend all events, but that shouldn't stop a ride ...no matter where.
Why shouldn't there be a west coast ride? You've got someone willing to step up to the plate & organize an event. I say either support the organizers or keep your thoughts to yourself.
So good luck Butch. If I win the lotto, I'll definitely be there with my colored tequila:cheer:

I guess I should have stuck this in the title not the 4th paragraph... sorry my bad, I just edited it now..
I was hoping that with enough notice anyone that has the meens to vacation on on the westcoast would want to attend... they key word is "Want", there is just no way we "can" get everyone here..

I say you do like a cool East VS. West contest but the east coast rides @ a given location in the east and the same for the west. So some way do like a broadcast between the 2.
Kinda far out idea but it would be cool:biggthumpup:

I love the idea. But I do agree that cali is much harder for most people to get to. I did notice that we had a much larger turnout for the Freestyle Surf Slam in Pismo this year then the IFWA Oceanside event last year. As much as I prefer the surf in Mexico it just isn't as practical. I think Pismo is the best option to get the biggest turnout. Lets make it happen. I don't mind whoring my ski for the weekend.

Have you guys seen the vehicle transporter companies that ship vehicles from one end of the country to the next. I wonder if it would be possible to organize a east coast ship ment of skis. Lets say he starts in NJ, then goes down south to TN or AL, then over to Oklahoma,,,,,so forth and so on. Everyone would be responsible for getting their boat to a regional pick up location as opposed making the arrangements to have 1 boat shipped. You could fit a crap load of boats in a 18 wheeler. Divide the cost by all the people and it may turn out to be a cost effective way of organizing a huge event that eveyone can attend.

Looks like its a go !!!
I have been dealing with a few trucking companies shipping ski's and i will ask some questions..
I'm thinking competition, no competition is going to the poll's to find out what the people want.....orrrrr run two events like smashing did ??
no competition....just a FREERIDE

I just sent a message to a trucking company i use to check rates on a truck starting in NY then off to Orlando, Kansas and out here.. they do event pick ups like this and said it would be no problem.. also for anyone that is on the way of the route can have them stop in any city (along the way)and make a pick up for $100.00 !!
I should have a price monday/tuesday
Also my trailer holds 4 skis and my truck 2 it would take but a hour or two to empty the truck and have them on the beach..

I really like the idea of this event but lets keep in mind that some of the best freestylers(not freeriders) in Cali don't ride in the surf and most likely wouldn't attend..**Maybe** a possible location to consider for this event could be San Diego Ca, at their water park rec area, tons of tralier/tote access, tons of parking, super nice shore line of sand and grass, water is mainly smooth but I *believe/think* the surf is close by being the water park is salt water and behind a protective sea wall , freakin tons of hot bikini clad women, lots of hotel/motels and an arsenal of hip restaurants and jam packed clubs. I have only been there twice and always thought, Dam, this is where they should host the World Finals, so much nicer, so much more to do, every thing imagineable is there in the way of entertainment..Maybe someone with MORE knowledge/experience with the San Diego water park/rec area could chine in(Rick Nies??).......it's just a though guys....................:cool2:

haha i would have to give my car an oil change during the road trip from Georgia!!! Well calculating the depritiation on my vehicle/gas mileage/ and time it would be more economical to ship the ski and fly but only because I have ONE ski, people with multiple ski's would think otherwise. But i have NEVER been west of alabama so IM IN, I heard californians are green with french accents.

Or....its just more so that we have a larger majority of riders including R7 where freestyle is bigger then anywhere else. Yes, it is out of the question for most people because its friggin on the other side of the country. We can attend tons of rides here for surf and flat....or make one trip to CA.

If people wanted to fly into Ontario airport (a major airport close to me,sorry LAX sucks) I can pick up 3 people.. 4 more if someone I know wants to use/drive my truck to haul a few people.. fly in/out days would have to be set up pretty tight..
Im thinking of a way to use help from a sponsor for the trucking idea (if enough eastern/mid/south guys want to come out) i know air fare is pretty cheap if booked for enough in advance..

We can make it any date we want.. I was only picking the summer to give families (schools are out/vacations) a chance to attend..

Summer is definitly best, its warmer and kids are out of school. I think June 25-july 1 is good becasue its between the riot ride and the Rock-n-Ride.

Well I gotta say im gonna try and make it because my girlfriend is moving out the CA mid summer so if its after im game. But with a possible trip to Daytona for spring break, a chance at Riot, and Wave Rave its going to be tough.
pancake your going im gonna make sure of that

We need a name for this event. Maybe get some ideas and make a poll and let everybody vote on like the top 5 or 3.

What about the week after and doing it having a party july 4th?

Wasn't tryin to start an argument about surf vs flat with a suggestion of San Deigo but that general location offers much more than a few motels and a taco stand for entertainment outside of the riding. Maybe I'm wrong but i think the Riot Ride and a couple others look like a kick arse time with good turn outs and they appear to be in the flat...Now "Sack-Up", use some Real Skill and do a freakin barrel roll or BF without the help of a 5' ramp :tomato:

Don't tell me about that. I flew to the daytona ride last year injured to hang out with peeps. All I'm sayin is that if there's gonna be a freeride in California, it would be freakin retarded not to have it in the surf.
Agreed....I just took it as a "why would anyone dirve for flatwater thing" If your in cali witht hat surf...theres no reason not to ride it
if theres gonna be a competion i think it should with no rules on motor and hull

I dont think it matters all that much. Just do it a weekend that nothing else is going on.

What about doing one on the west coast (UK), not too far for me then!

I really want this to be a X-h20 riders ride..
Cory (or anyone).. If you want to name it... please do !
We really need to set some dates.. (i really dont think whats going on in Ohio will affect much out here on the same dates) thats just my thoughts.
Should we see if we can get some input from people with kids on the dates across the nation ?
Out here our traditional schools get let out june 25th
year round is off june 15th and all of july..
I was looking at the camp list and as of right now if we pick a week/week end close to the 4th we better team up and start booking camp sites (you can only book 6 months in advance and its 6 months now !).. they can fill up fast !

im deffinately in. i dont want to have to wait till oct 2007 for another westcoast freeride. i think we shouldnt make the date too close to the 4th of july because alot of people go away on the 4th and it might be hard for people make it if its the previous or following weekend.
just keep it a freeride, no competion. that way you dont have to mess with permits and it will be less work for the poeple organizing the event.
as far as names go, can we not use the word "bash" in the name? i'll go no matter what its called, but i wont buy a shirt that says "2007 BONER JAM SURF BASH"

I concur...we need to set a date very very soon. It will help people plan for the trip and coordinate with other rides.
Someone mentioned the Cleveland ride around the same time. One thing to consider would be this: Would riders that are planning on attending the Cleveland ride be even interested in attending a west coast ride within the same 4-week or so window?
I personally think anything after the 4th of July would be great. Keeping it inside July, or even the first week of August would be ideal, as World Finals come up not too long after that. School starts back up in August/September as well.
We need ideas/suggestions please!

As far as schools it seems like out east or atleast SE it is late may or early june.
As soon as we get dates picked(which proably needs to be done now or very soon) we cna starting gathering them up.

Well as far as i know this is jsut gonna be a freeride, but if its gonna be a week long i say we throw a type of surf contest that anybody can enter. Maybe like AM and PRO?

Well the first week in august is the weekend of the pismo sand blast. I say we move the date of that maybe 2 weeks early and have it the 16-22 of july?

Cory.. This will take the place of the old sand blast, that was a hurry up and ride ride with 2 weeks notice becaue no one had anything going on at that time...
I will have the trucking info tomorrow and will post up what I have found out.. If anyone out in the east knows of anyone thats into trucking please speak up !! Thanks.
I just posted a new thread for the dates that "I" felt would be a good choice..I made it easy.. just pick a number !

I know myself and Pete would put our machines on a truck but can't speak for the rest of the crew .
I would love to see the west coast because I've only been as far west as Pennsylvania (I know it's lame ).
If you set it up they will come
You know I'm busting your balls about the resume :haha: No competiton would be best .just look at the head count for Daytona as an example.just a cherry buster for a competition and look how many peeps are going .
12 from New England alone and it'a a 24 hr drive .A 6 hour plane ride sounds better as long as our ski's are on a truck

I would LOVE to go to a cali ride. Might be hard to convince the wife into a 3000 mile journey for jetskis though lol. She doesnt quite have the love for it that we all do. But she did say that she wants to drive cross country.

But not without a destroyed driveline, and certainly not without hull crackage.
